What does GSM mean?

GSM stands grams per square meter. It’s a key measurement that indicates the weight and density of fabrics like towels and bathrobes. GSM is a universal standard in the textile industry, which helps to determine the quality, feel and performance of a fabric.

How is GSM calculated?

GSM is calculated by weighing one square meter of fabric in grams. A higher GSM means the fabric is denser, heavier and generally softer and better quality. This is because the higher the GSM, the greater the concentration of fibres within the fabric.

How does GSM affect absorbency?

Higher GSM towels and bathrobes are more absorbent as their increased thickness allows them to hold more water. They’re also softer, fluffier and feel more luxurious thanks to the thicker pile. Higher GSM towels are generally more durable too and can withstand frequent washing, but they do take longer to dry.

Is high GSM always better?

A lower GSM can be a better choice for certain areas of spa and hotel operations, as the products are more lightweight, which means they’re quicker to dry and more therefore cost-effective to launder. Low GSM towels and robes are ideal for environments where drying speed is critical, and they are more affordable than higher GSM options. While low GSM towels may not have quite the same plushness, they are the right choice for properties looking for sustainability, practicality and convenience.

It’s worth noting that GSM weight isn’t the only thing that contributes to plushness; how long the individual cotton loops are also plays a part. The longer the pile the softer the towel will feel after repeated washing and drying.

What are the GSM ranges?
